"Each of my Sailor’s Valentines is my original design, meticulously hand-crafted by placing each and every seashell individually to create the desired pattern. Symmetrical or asymmetrical designs reinforce the theme of each piece.
Following tradition, the Valentines are crafted within an artfully constructed 8-sided box. Only the finest hardwoods are used, including curly maple, mahogany, oak and black walnut. Glass is cut and fitted for each Valentine so that the shell mosaic will be protected and preserved.
My fascination with symmetry, formal balance and precision has inspired me to join in the resurgence of this ‘lost art’ of Sailors’ Valentines. Having grown up at the seashore, I have a special fondness for the beauty and intricate designs of seashells. It is my intention to share this unique fine craft with those who appreciate fine works of art reminiscent of their historical past.” Joyce Amend
